DFW PR Girl: What do you hope to convey through your designs?
Nikyah Lumbard: I hope to convey a beautiful woman without being overtly sexy. A classic beauty. I want to create garments that can be worn for more than 30 secs. It’s good to follow trends but it’s also ok to create some along the way. I want to create garments that you can wear more than once and they still look as beautiful as the very first time you wore them. See everyone’s interpretation of each look.
DFW PR Girl: In what ways has Detroit inspired you?
Nikyah Lumbard: Detroit has inspired me in so many ways. This is a beautiful city that has so much to offer. From the graffiti on vacant buildings on Grand River to the beautiful architecture of the high-rises downtown, every thing that you look at can become an inspiration.
DFW PR Girl: What is the most rewarding part of being a fashion designer?
Nikyah Lumbard: The best part of being a fashion designer is being able to color outside the lines. You are the person that creates the looks that help others express their personalities. A woman can be quiet, non social, reserved person but the moment she puts on a gorgeous cocktail dress, a killer pair of heels and dolls up, she is the total opposite of what she used to be. I want to be a part of those moments. I want my garments to play a major role in the story told the following day.
